Saint Verena of Zurzach

القديسة فيرينا
Virgin and Missionary from Egypt
Feast Day: Nasi 4 (September 10)

Saint Verena is one of the most fascinating Coptic saints because her story extends from Egypt all the way to Switzerland. According to tradition, she was born near Thebes in Egypt in the late third century and was connected to the Theban Legion — a group of Egyptian Christian soldiers who served in the Roman army. The Theban Legion was martyred in Switzerland for refusing to persecute fellow Christians.

Verena traveled from Egypt to Switzerland following the soldiers of the Theban Legion, seeking to pray at the graves of her martyred companions. She settled near a Roman camp at Solothurn on the Aare River. There she lived as a hermit, serving the poor and sick people of the surrounding area. She gave them physical care — bathing them, combing their hair — as well as spiritual care, teaching them the Christian faith.

She was imprisoned and persecuted multiple times but always survived and continued her mission. She eventually settled in a cave in Zurzach, where she died peacefully in extreme old age. She is one of the most important patron saints of Switzerland and Austria, where many churches and towns bear her name. Her story is a beautiful reminder that the Coptic Church has been sending missionaries into the world since the very beginning.
