About CoptAra
The Name
Copt comes from the Greek Aigyptos, meaning Egypt. The Coptic people are literally "the Egyptians," one of the oldest continuous Christian communities on earth, founded by the Apostle and Evangelist St. Mark in Alexandria around 42 AD.
-ara comes from Aramaic and Hebrew אורא (ora), meaning light.
CoptAra means Ancient Light: the light of a faith that has burned for two thousand years, through persecution, diaspora, and renewal.
"Where ancient faith meets every soul"
Why We Built This
The Coptic diaspora is scattered across every continent. Many grew up in the Church, moved somewhere new, and lost the thread. Others were raised in the faith but never had the tools to go deeper. Some are encountering the ancient Coptic tradition for the very first time and have no idea where to start.
There is no shortage of Coptic content, but it's fragmented, hard to find, and rarely built with the diaspora in mind. CoptAra is an attempt to change that.
We're building a platform where a Coptic family in Australia, a seeker in Texas, and a convert in Germany can all find what they need: devotional content, daily prayer, spiritual guidance, and community tools, all grounded in authentic Coptic Orthodox doctrine.
Divine: The AI Guide
At the heart of CoptAra is Divine, an AI spiritual guide trained to respond from a Coptic Orthodox perspective. Divine draws from trusted Coptic theological sources to answer questions about the faith, explain the liturgy, introduce the saints, and offer devotional reflections.
Divine is not a priest. It cannot offer sacraments, hear confession, or replace your father of confession. It is a tool, a knowledgeable companion for the journey, not a substitute for the Church. We are fully transparent about this, and we take it seriously.
Divine is currently being developed and will launch after the legal and content foundation of the platform is solid.
The Charity Pledge
25% of every donation received through CoptAra goes directly to Coptic Orthodox charities. We maintain a public transparency page showing total donations received and total disbursed to charity.
The remaining 75% covers operating costs: server hosting, AI model API costs, domain, and development. CoptAra is not a non-profit yet, but the charitable commitment is a core part of what we are.
Charitable recipients will be Coptic Orthodox churches and registered organizations. Candidates include Coptic Orphans, St. Shenouda Coptic Society, and local Coptic church building and mission funds. The final list will be published on the transparency page.
What We Are Not
We want to be direct about what CoptAra is not:
- We are not officially affiliated with the Coptic Orthodox Church or any diocese.
- We are not a replacement for your local church, priest, or spiritual father.
- Divine is not a mental health service. For crisis support, see our support page.
- We are not a platform for theological debate or interfaith discourse. Our content is grounded in Coptic Orthodox tradition.
