Saint Joseph the Carpenter

القديس يوسف النجار
Righteous Man, Foster Father of Jesus
Feast Day: Bashans 26 (June 3)

Saint Joseph was a carpenter in Nazareth, a just and righteous man of the tribe of Judah, a descendant of King David. He was engaged to the Virgin Mary when the angel told him about the miraculous conception of Jesus. Rather than shame Mary publicly, his first instinct was to protect her quietly — the mark of a deeply good man. Then an angel appeared to him in a dream and confirmed the truth: what was conceived in Mary was from the Holy Spirit.

Joseph obeyed God immediately, marrying Mary and taking her into his care. He was with her in Bethlehem at the birth, providing whatever safety and shelter he could. When an angel warned him in a dream to flee to Egypt, he rose in the middle of the night without delay, protecting the Holy Family from Herod's violence. When it was time to return, he obeyed again.

We do not have a single recorded word from Joseph in the Gospels — only actions. He acted with courage, obedience, humility, and silent faithfulness. He raised the Son of God in his workshop, teaching Jesus the carpenter's trade with his own hands. He is the patron of fathers and of workers — a model of how holiness is lived not in grand speeches but in daily obedience, quiet protection, and faithful work.
