The Wedding at Cana
John 2:1–11
Jesus and His disciples were guests at a wedding in the town of Cana in Galilee. His mother Mary was also there. In the middle of the celebration, something embarrassing happened: the wine ran out. Mary went to Jesus and said simply, "They have no wine." Jesus said, "Dear woman, why do you involve me? My hour has not yet come." But Mary trusted Him completely. She told the servants, "Do whatever He tells you."
Jesus pointed to six large stone water jars used for ceremonial washing and told the servants to fill them with water — about 150 gallons in total. They filled them to the brim. Then He said, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." The servants did so. The master tasted it and was amazed — it was the finest wine he had ever had.
This was Jesus' first miracle, done quietly, without fanfare, almost privately. The servants knew what had happened. His disciples believed in Him. Mary's gentle intercession had moved Him to begin His ministry. The Coptic Church especially honors this miracle because it shows us how to bring our needs to Jesus through the intercession of His mother Mary — "Do whatever He tells you" is her eternal advice to us all.
