The Sermon on the Mount
Matthew 5–7
When Jesus saw the great crowds following Him, He went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around Him, and He began to teach. What came next has been called the greatest sermon ever preached — the Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount.
He said, "Blessed are the poor in spirit — for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn — for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek — for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness — for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful — for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart — for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers — for they will be called children of God."
These were not the values the world celebrated — the world honored the proud, the powerful, and the wealthy. But Jesus turned everything upside down, showing that the Kingdom of God operates on completely different principles: love, mercy, humility, and purity of heart. He also taught the Lord's Prayer — "Our Father, who art in heaven" — which Coptic Christians pray every single day. This mountain sermon is the heart of Christian living.
