Solomon's Wisdom

1 Kings 3

After King David died, his son Solomon became king of Israel. One night, God appeared to Solomon in a dream and said, "Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you." This was an incredible offer! Solomon could have asked for riches, long life, victory over his enemies — anything.

But Solomon asked for wisdom. He said, "Lord, I am very young and I do not know how to lead this great people. Give me wisdom to judge rightly, to know good from evil." God was deeply pleased. He said that since Solomon had not asked for wealth or power but for wisdom to serve others, He would give him not only wisdom, but also riches and honor beyond any king of his time.

Solomon became famous throughout the world for his wisdom. Kings and queens traveled from distant lands to hear him speak. He wrote thousands of proverbs, songs, and the beautiful book called the Song of Songs. He built the glorious Temple in Jerusalem. Wisdom — true wisdom — is knowing that we need God's guidance more than anything else in the world. The Coptic Church teaches us to pray for wisdom above all other gifts.
