Paul and Silas in Prison

Acts 16:16–34

Paul and Silas were missionaries traveling through Macedonia. In the city of Philippi, they freed a slave girl from an evil spirit that had given her the ability to predict the future. Her owners were furious because this was their source of income. They had Paul and Silas dragged before the authorities, beaten with rods, and thrown into the innermost cell of the prison, their feet locked in stocks.

At midnight, in that dark, painful prison cell, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God. The other prisoners were listening in amazement. Then suddenly a violent earthquake shook the foundations of the prison. All the doors flew open and everyone's chains fell off. The jailer woke up and seeing the doors open, assumed the prisoners had escaped — he was about to kill himself rather than face punishment. Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!"

The jailer fell trembling before Paul and Silas and asked, "What must I do to be saved?" They answered, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved — you and your household." That same night, the jailer washed their wounds and was baptized with his whole family. This story shows us: worship God even in your darkest moments — He can shake the foundations of any prison.
