On this day, 5 Misra 1742, we remember the countless Coptic martyrs who have given their lives for the sake of the Gospel. As St. Paul writes in Hebrews 12:1, we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, who have run the race of faith with perseverance and finished their course with joy.

Their stories, though varied, share a common thread - an unwavering commitment to Christ, even in the face of unimaginable suffering. From the early Christian martyrs of Alexandria to the modern-day saints who have died for their faith, the Coptic Church has been blessed with a rich heritage of martyrdom.

As we reflect on the lives of these martyrs, we are reminded of the words of St. Paul in Romans 8:36, where he writes, 'As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.' Yet, even in the midst of such suffering, the apostle affirms that 'in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.'

The Coptic martyrs embody this spirit of conquest, their faith unshaken by the trials they faced. They are a testament to the power of the Gospel to transform lives, to overcome even the most daunting challenges, and to bring hope in the darkest of times.

As we honor their memory, we are called to follow in their footsteps, to take up our own cross and follow Christ, no matter the cost. May their witness inspire us to live out our faith with courage, conviction, and compassion, that we too may be counted among the great cloud of witnesses who have given their lives for the sake of the Gospel.

As Pope Shenouda III once said, 'The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.' May we cherish this precious seed, nurturing it in our own lives, that the Church may continue to flourish and grow, even in the face of adversity.

May the prayers of the Coptic martyrs be with us, and may we be worthy of their sacrifice, as we strive to follow in their footsteps, and to finish our own course with joy, that we may hear the words of our Lord, 'Well done, good and faithful servant.'
